It has also been my experience that if you decide to choose something that you don't care about all that much or doesn't excite you, then you will have much more difficulty motivating yourself and staying on task.
I have also found that if there is nothing much to be obtained other than the grade on the final product that this just isn't enough to keep me properly interested and the final product's quality tends to suffer. You might also consider choosing something that is going to benefit you in some way either now or in the near future. Perhaps your choice could further a skill you already have or allow you to gain a new one. It could even be recounting and reflecting on an event or pivotal person in your past and how they effected you.
It is my belief that compositionitis is, in part, caused by poor topics. When assigned to write about an event or subject that has little or no direct effect on you it becomes quite hard to compose new material on it. I also think that being forced to write about something also stifles creativity. How good is your paper really going to be if you just plain don't care what you are writing about?
