ACE: also know as argument, citation, and explanation is the only clear, concise, and effective way to write a research paper if you want to receive a high grade. When you use ACE you are already forcing yourself, as the writer, to think about what the quote you’re about to use really means, and how it will strengthen your paper. In order for you as the writer to use ACE effectively you have to follow three steps.
Step one: Figure out what your argument is. Your argument is key in finding a citation that will help your paper because once your know what you are trying to prove, or disprove, in your paper, then you will be able to select a citation and figure out a way that to make your citation support your claim, or argue against it.
Step 2: find a citation that fits what you are trying to do. Without ACE a writer is much more likely to just pick a quote and insert it into their paper without fully thinking about what the quote/citation is trying to say. With ACE, once the writer has figured out their argument, then they know exactly what kind of citation they are trying to find, and will be able to use the citation to its full potential.
Step 3: explain what the citation means. If you as a writer have made an argument and inserted a citation and don’t explain it, then you have wasted your time, and not followed the rules of ACE. If you are going to use ACE the right way, then you must have a explanation to go along with your argument and quote because without the explanation, then the citation has no meaning and the citation isn’t being used properly.
