The purpose of an outline is to put your ideas about the topic on paper, in a organized layout. This doesnt mean you have to have put the ideas in the order of the outline, you can always change your order.The first part of making an outline is writing your topic down. After that the put roman numerals down the left side of the paper I, II, III ect. Next to each number put your main ideas about your topic. If you have more information on the subtopic then tab over and but a lower case a, then write your information.
The reason why outlines were created is to keep the writer from going all over the place during writing. Otherwise your paper might come out and be on big peace of pizza dough.
Overall outlines are one of the most important part of writing a paper. Why? Because of the reasons stated above. Its the skeleton of the paper. If you don't have the skeleton then it will just but a big blob of pizza dough.
